How To Apply For Your U.S. Visa
Indian citizens who wish to visit the USA temporarily must first obtain a visa. The Consular Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata reviews more than 20,000 applications for nonimmigrant visas every year. Nonimmigrant visa applicants are required to present sufficient documentation to demonstrate their economic and social ties to India. U.S. law presumes that anyone who applies for a nonimmigrant visa intends to remain in the USA permanently.

Visa Fees
Nonimmigrant Visa applicants must submit two fees:

An Application Fee: Rs.4,200/-
This fee must be paid at designated branches of HDFC Bank and the receipt (in duplicate) featuring two yellow bar code stickers, must be submitted at the Consulate on the day of interview. This fee is non refundable and alongwith this VFS Service Charge (additional fee of Rs.322/- inclusive of Service Tax @ 10% and Education Cess Tax @0.2%) would need to be paid at HDFC Bank towards online or phone-in information, assistance with making appointments and return by courier of passports with your visa.

Persons applying for "blanket" L-1 visas must pay $500 "fraud prevention and detection fee" at the time they make their visa application. Only the principal applicant applying for the L-1 visa needs to pay this fee. The fee does not apply to any spouse or children applying for a L-2 visa. This fee must be paid via a bank draft for Rs. 21,000/- made out to the American Consulate General, Kolkata.

Photo Requirement for U.S. Visas
The photograph must be a color photo taken within the last 6 months. The photograph must be a full face, front view with eyes open, facing the camera; no side or angled views are acceptable.
The photograph should measure 2 inches square (roughly 50mm) with the head centered in the frame (see figure below). The head (measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin) should measure between 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches (25mm and 35mm).
